The cause of cold urticaria isn't clear. But certain people appear to have overly sensitive histamine-containing skin cells.
As much as possible, people with cold urticaria should avoid exposure to cold air as well as cold water. For example, swimming in cold water is the most common cause of a severe, whole-body reaction — leading to fainting, shock and even death."
true, i am self-diagnosed. but i have my reasons.
it started out with cold beverages. my hands would redden and itch after a mere 2 minutes. discomfort i could tolerate.
yet not so much when it's a full body reaction. what was supposed to be a happy day of boogie boarding in laguna beach, turned out be a frightening scare to myself and my friends with me. 15 minutes into the water, i was red/itchy/burning from head to toe. got out, dried off with a towel, and noticed inflated bumps (hives) across my thighs, stomach, and arms. My skin was wrinkly and elizabeth said it resembled the hide of a rhinoceros. my entire body swelled up like a balloon. the rings on my fingers wouldn't slide off and i could barely move my toes.i couldn't stop shaking, but i forced myself to get up and walk back toward the car. took 4 steps and fell to my knees. looked up, and my vision was impaired. black and splotchy, like what you get when you rub your eyes too long and too hard, but this time, they didn't disappear. didn't clear up. my head was pounding. all i wanted to do was lie down. but even that didn't ease the pain. fainting would have been a breeze. that way i'd be unconscious of my physical state.
i thought it was the water. allergic to sea salt? seaweed?
but then just last week, i went swimming in my own pool. a place i spent almost everyday in, last summer. 7 minutes in the pool. same reaction. maybe not as severe, but i still became swollen. i still broke out in hives. itchy/burning sensation. mild headache.
when i drive and the air conditioning is directed toward my face, my ears and neck begin to itch. i turn it off, more willing to sweat than deal with the prickling irritation.
when i eat too much ice cream or drink too much cold water at once, my throat gets itchy.
researches say this condition develops between the ages of 18-25
...awesome.
